Tracking Dapper's progress

While our readers debate as to what exactly a Dapper Drake is, developers from around the world have gathered in Montreal, Canada at the Ubuntu Below Zero conference to begin work on the next release.

Can’t make the trip? Don’t worry, there’s an easy way to track the development progress as it unfolds. This specification page on the Launchpad has the list of topics being discussed at the conference. These specifications will completed as the conference continues, and will eventually be the feature goals that will guide the development of Ubuntu 6.04. Many groups of Ubuntu users around the world have websites, forums, and IRC channels, so if you’re looking for people local to you to spread the love, make sure you check out the list of teams around the world.

If there’s no team in your area, you can always make your own, and join the ever growing Ubuntu Local Team community.

Development on Ubuntu 6.04 Begins

sabdfl has kicked off the development cycle for Ubuntu 6.04 (Dapper Drake). A preliminary list of goals has already been started. This upcoming version will feature three years of desktop support and five years of server support, so the development cycle will be probably be different from what has been done in the past. The bulk of this planning and specification work for the release will be done at the Ubuntu Below Zero development conference in Montreal, Canada during the first week of November.

Help and Doc Team websites launched

Matthew East has announced the opening of two new websites for users. The first is help.ubuntu.com, which is the new home to the official documentation for the project. It includes the Quick Tour, as well as the awesome FAQ Guide. Kubuntu documentation should arrive shortly.

The second site, doc.ubuntu.com is intended to be the home page for the Documentation Team itself. Make sure you check it out if you’re interested in contributing to the ongoing documentation projects, or just stop by #ubuntu-doc on Freenode to find out how to get started.
